An Archos PMP is mobile and has a hard drive. Then why bother carrying DVDs everywhere ? Thus, it is preferable (it is also the original role of the Archos PMPs…) to convert one’s DVDs in a format compatible with the PMP.
This tutorial guides you through the process of encoding a DVD in order to make it compatible with you Archos 604/504/404 and older generations.
In order to do that, we’re going to use the encoding freeware FairUse Wizard 2 (downloadable here). It is effective and intuitive. Also, any video encoded with this freeware is systematically compatible with Archos PMPs.
To start, give a name to your project (DVD title). Then choose the file where the freeware will be able to work (it will keep temporary files in there). Finish by clicking on “Next” (may appear in French : “Suivant”).

A new window opens. Select the DVD drive which contains the DVD you want to encode.

Then, the freeware creates the file index.

You can choose the audio tracks and adjust the video format (remember to enter the right resolution for your Archos PMP).

That’s it ; the long encoding (2 hours in total) can begin. There will be 3 encoding phases… but then it’s done !
